Crispy and fluffy Irish Potato Farls, perfect for breakfast or as a comforting snack, embody the spirit of Irish cuisine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium potatoes (Russet, Maris Piper, Roosters)
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter (plus more for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Start by peeling and chopping the potatoes. Steam or boil them in a medium pot until tender—about 20-25 minutes works well.
  2. Once cooked, transfer the potatoes to a sieve over a bowl to let them dry for 5 minutes.
  3. Pass the potatoes through the sieve for a light and fluffy texture.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the passed potatoes with flour, salt, pepper, and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, place the dough and flatten it into an 8-inch disc. Cut the disc into 6 equal pieces.
  6. Heat a bit of butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the potato farls, cooking for about 5 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Flip and repeat for another 4-5 minutes on the opposite side.
  7. Enjoy these beauties immediately—either as part of a traditional Irish breakfast or all on their own!

Notes

For an extra creamy texture, consider mashing the potatoes instead of passing them through a sieve. Experiment with herbs or spices for added flavor.
