A comforting Southern classic featuring crispy chicken fried steak topped with creamy white gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces of cube steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for gravy)
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, mix the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and whisk in the buttermilk until well combined.
  3. Dip each piece of cube steak into the egg mixture, letting any excess drip off before coating it evenly with the seasoned flour.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry each piece of coated steak for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. For the gravy, melt butter in the same skillet. Whisk in the flour to create a roux and cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  7. Gradually add the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens.
  8. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve the crispy chicken fried steak generously topped with the warm, creamy gravy.

Notes

For best results, let the oil reach the right temperature before frying and consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper for an extra kick.
