A delightful twist on the classic Italian dish, this Crispy Chicken Parmesan Casserole combines cheese and marinara with hearty chicken, all baked to perfection.

  • 3 large chicken breasts, cooked and chopped
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 1/2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded provolone or fontina cheese (optional)
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly.
  2. Mix the cooked chicken with kosher salt, ground black pepper, and garlic powder until evenly coated.
  3. Spread the seasoned chicken evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce over the chicken, and, if desired, sprinkle with dried basil and oregano.
  5. Top the chicken and sauce with shredded mozzarella and grated parmesan cheese.
  6. Combine panko breadcrumbs with melted butter, garlic powder, and chopped parsley in another bowl. Mix until the breadcrumbs are well-coated.
  7. Scatter the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the cheese layer.
  8. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

For a crispier topping, ensure your panko is well-coated in butter. Consider adding freshly grated Parmesan into the breadcrumb mixture for extra flavor.
