A comforting dish combining ground chicken with seasonings and marinara, topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided in half
  • 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 770 mL marinara sauce
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 sprigs basil
  • to 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crispy Topping: Melt the unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the panko breadcrumbs, ¼ teaspoon of salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning. Cook until golden—this should take about 3-4 minutes—then set it aside.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: In a large pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until it turns translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the roughly chopped garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Combine Chicken and Seasonings: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken with half a teaspoon of salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano. Gently fold in the sautéed onion and garlic mixture.
  4. Mix in Marinara: Pour in the marinara sauce and toss until the chicken is evenly coated.
  5. Layer in the Baking Dish: Grease a baking dish, then layer half of the chicken mixture at the bottom. Sprinkle half of the parmesan cheese, half of the crispy breadcrumbs, and fresh basil on top.
  6. Complete the Layers: Add the remaining chicken mixture, then a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese, followed by the rest of the breadcrumbs.
  7. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbling with golden edges.
  8. Serving Time: Let the dish cool slightly before serving to avoid burns and to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

Serve with a salad or garlic bread to complement the dish. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days.
