Delicious heart-shaped sugar cookies that are easy to make and perfect for decorating. Ideal for holidays, school events, or as sweet handmade gifts.

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • Icing for decoration
  • Sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line cookie sheets with parchment.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder until mixed.
  3. Cream together the softened butter and white sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, then stir in vanilla and almond extracts.
  5. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until combined, adding milk as needed.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and space on cookie sheets.
  7. Flatten each ball with a sugared glass to shape them.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until edges are golden. Watch closely to avoid overbaking.
  9. Let cool, then decorate with icing and sprinkles as desired.

Notes

For better control over salt use unsalted butter. To modify thickness, adjust milk from 3 to 4 tablespoons. Almond extract can be omitted for vanilla cookies.
