A quick and easy stovetop mac and cheese recipe that delivers creamy, cheesy goodness in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions; drain and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Whisk in the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth; cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Gradually add milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese until melted and the sauce is glossy.
  6. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and mix until well combined. Serve hot.

Notes

For a creamier result, you can swap half the cheddar for Monterey Jack or Gruyère. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
