A decadent brunch dish combining the creamy charm of crème brûlée with the comforting familiarity of French toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of brioche or French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar for topping
  • Optional: fresh berries or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into thick slices and arrange them in the dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring they’re thoroughly coated.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, ideally overnight.
  6. Remove from the refrigerator, sprinkle brown sugar on top, and bake for about 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving, optionally garnish with fresh berries or whipped cream.

Notes

For maximum flavor, let the bread soak overnight. A kitchen torch works best for caramelizing the sugar on top.
