Delicious, crispy homemade hash browns that are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a quick dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 1 small onion (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes by peeling and grating them using a box grater or food processor.
  2. Rinse the grated potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch and drain them thoroughly.
  3. If using, finely chop the onion and mix it with the grated potatoes.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  5. Add the grated potato mixture to the skillet, pressing it down with a spatula to form an even layer.
  6. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Flip the hash browns in sections using a spatula and cook for another 5-7 minutes on the other side.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve hot.

Notes

For a creamier texture, you can swap russet potatoes for Yukon Gold or use sweet potatoes for a different flavor.
